  "title": "Let us love even loneliness.",
  "translated_text": "A person who is strong\nin the face of loneliness\nis truly strong.\nAs children,\nwe cannot bear\nbeing bored,\nand even\nas adults,\nwe are bored\nto death.\nEveryone in the world\nis helpless\nbefore loneliness.\n\nThis is not because\nthat fellow called loneliness\nis strong,\nbut because\nthe human mind\nthat fears and avoids(hates)\nloneliness\ngives that fellow\ncalled loneliness\nits power.\nTherefore,\nwhen that fellow\ncalled loneliness comes,\ndo not look away\nor turn it away\nat the door.\nWelcome it in\nand look at it.\nMeet its eyes.\nThat fellow\ncalled loneliness\n\nslips in\nlike a thief\nwhen no one\nis looking\nand captures\nthe mind.\nBut once\nit is seen,\nit becomes\nhelpless.\nThat little fellow, too, \ncame\nwanting to be loved,\njust once!\n\nKnowing this,\nif you say,\n“All right,\n come anytime,”\nleave the door\nwide open,\nand even\nwelcome it,\nit soon\nsubsides.\nFor its purpose\nis to be loved.\nLove\nis the cure for all ills.\nBeginning\nwith loneliness,\nthe arising\nof a single thought\nis birth,\nand the disappearing\nof a single thought\nis death.\nThe way\na single thought\nis born and dies\nis the same\nas the way\na living being\nis born and dies.\nTherefore,\nalways\nstay awake.\nWhen not awake,\nsleep comes,\nand dreaming\nbegins.\nWhen caught\nin loneliness,\nthat thing\ncalled loneliness\nbecomes\nthe master,\nand a whole\nworld of dreams\ntakes shape.\nOnce \ncaught \nin loneliness,\n\nyou have fallen\ninto the world \nof dreams.\nIt is your own mind,\nyet your own mind\ndoes not obey you.\nBecause\nyou have fallen\ninto a dream!\nA dream\nyou dream\nwith your eyes open!\nYou pay\nthe price\nfor hating\nloneliness\nthrough\na dream!\nIt is\na kind of\npunishment.\nBecause\nhating\nis not\nthe truth\nof the universe,\nit casts you\ninto\na world\nof falsehood.\nOnly when\nyou wake\nfrom the dream\ndo you know\nfor certain\nthat hating\nis not\nthe truth.\nNo need\nto love.\nIf you do not hate,\nit is\nall love.\nHatred is\nfalsehood,\na dream,\nan illusion.\nWhen\nthe dream,\nthe illusion,\nand the falsehood\ndisappear,\nwhat remains,\njust as it is,\nis truth\nand love.\nBecause\na human being\nis, by nature,\nlove\nitself.\nThe place\nof the original mind\nis, so to speak,\nempty,\nbright,\nand infinite.\n\nNothing lacking.\n\nA being\nnever lonely.\n\nLoneliness\nis a false\nexistence\nin a dream.\nTo say\nthat people\nare born lonely\nis to speak\nin a dream.\nOnce you wake\nfrom the dream,\nthat thing\ncalled loneliness,\nno matter\nhow hard\nyou look,\nis nowhere\nto be seen.\nTherefore,\nso as not\nto fall asleep\nand\ndream,\nyou must\nkeep your eyes\nwide open\nand stay\nawake.\nWhether\nthat thing\ncalled loneliness\ncomes along,\nor that thing\ncalled boredom\ncomes along—\nso you can\nwelcome it.\nThe moment\nyou look away,\nit slips in\nlike lightning\nand takes hold\nof your mind.\nOnce\nyou are caught,\nit is\nvery hard\nto get free.\nNot easy\nto wake from the dream.\n\nWhen you become \nfully awake (awakened),\n\nno friend is needed.\n\nTherefore,\n\nnot bound \nby friends,\n\nyou are free.\n\nYou can be \na friend \nto anyone.\n\nIt is the realm of\n“In heaven and on earth,\nI alone am honored.”\n\nEmpty sky,\nholding the whole universe\nas one.\n\nThe richest of the rich.\n\nA president is not the point.\nA tycoon is not the point.\n\nYou are the master\nof the world \nyou made.\n\nLoneliness\nis a good koan.\nWhen loneliness rushes in,\nthat is when sleep rushes in.\nThat is the moment\nyou begin\nto dream.\nIf I look away,\nI become\na slave\nto loneliness.\nTherefore,\nI must always\nguard\nmy own house.\nI must\nstay awake.\nTo know\nthat sleep\nis coming,\nto know\nthat I am\ndreaming—\nthat is\nbeing awake.\nKnowing it comes\nwhen it comes,\nknowing it goes\nwhen it goes—\nthen I am\nthe master.\nI must know\nwhen the guest\ncomes and goes\nin my house.\nOnly then\nam I\nthe master.\nAs I go on\nliving awake\nlike that,\nit settles in,\nand the one\nwho comes,\nthe one\nwho goes—\nboth\ndisappear.\nBecause\nthere is nothing\nbut me.\nBecause\ninside and outside\ndisappear.\nBecause\nI have grown\ninfinitely large.\nSelf and things, one. \nSubject and object, one.\n\nBy then,\nthere is\nno coming\nand\nno going.\nIt is the realm\nwhere time\nand space\nare unified\nas one.\nIt is the realm\nwhere time\nis, yet is not,\nwhere space\nis, yet is not.\nIt is the realm\nof awakening.\nThat thing\ncalled loneliness\nis not\na being\nthat torments me,\nbut a being\nthat longs\nfor love,\nand a being\nthat teaches me\nlove as well.\nThat little\nfellow,\nI mean.\nThank you,\nLoneliness!\nWithout you,\nhow could I\nhave written\nsomething like this\ntoday!\nLet us love\neven loneliness!\nEven more so,\nwe should not\nlook down upon\neven the smallest creatures,\neven insects.\nEven more so,\nhow could we\nhave a heart\nthat hates\nanother person!\nTherefore,\neven toward\nthe things\nwe use at home—\nthe bed,\nblanket,\nshoes,\nclothes—\nwe should not\nhave it in us \nto treat them\ncarelessly.\nEven to the car,\nonce in a while,\nI should be able\nto say inwardly,\n“You’ve worked hard.”\nThat is\nthe way\nof the master.\nIs that not\nthe very heart\nthat loves\neven loneliness?\nIs that not\nthe very heart\nthat loves\nall things\nin heaven and earth!",
